As we’ve seen from their past press conferences over the years, Devolver Digital likes to do things a little bit differently compared to most other game publishers. Aside from highlighting their upcoming indie titles, the annual “Big Fancy Press Conferences” that Devolver puts on every tend to get very weird (in a good way), and very meta. As is tradition, they’ve taken things up a step further by not only offering a virtual press conference in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, but a virtual convention center as well that you can experience for yourself…if you dare.
During the Devolver Direct 2020, the indie game publisher closed off its (intentionally) bizarre presentation in the fashion that most video game press conferences do by offering “one more thing.” In this case, that took the form of Devolverland Expo, a “marketing simulator” from Devolver Digital available on Steam that you can play for free. As seen in the trailer, Devolverland Expo is a first-person experience set in a cancelled video game convention center that happens to look remarkably like E3 2020, and features several booths inspired by some of Devolver’s upcoming titles like Weird West, Fall Guys, Shadow Warrior 3, and many more. Given that E3 2020 and so many other gaming conventions have been cancelled for this year, props to Devolver for taking a wild premise and turning it into an even wilder simulated experience. Heck, maybe it could even be the model for other gaming conventions going forward.
