Death Stranding Shares Themes with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse According to Hideo Kojima

Everyone loves Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The award-winning film even struck a chord with video game guru and film connoisseur Hideo Kojima where he took to Twitter to express his enjoyment. He also said the theme of the film “is like TPP+DS,” yet again giving us another tease for his upcoming game Death Stranding. Here is the full tweet:

One could assume that “TTP” and “DS” are referring to Kojima’s latest projects Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and Death Stranding. This got the internet theorizing what this could mean. On a base level, does this confirm that Death Stranding is part of a multiverse similar to the many worlds and versions of Marvel’s web-crawler appear in the film?

One Reddit user High_Dephinition, thinks that it is less about a multiverse and more about how you assume your role after your predecessor:

Aside from the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse praise, Kojima says the movie “carries all the DNA, MEME, SCENE, and SENSE to make the next-gen of entertainment art.” These are the general themes for individual games in the Metal Gear Solid series.

Without getting too far into the weeds, “DNA” or “GENE” refers to the first Metal Gear Solid where it is inferred that your genes determine who you become. “MEME” refers to Metal Gear Solid 2 where it is shown that both good genes and good memes (or culture) can be passed on. In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, the main theme is “SCENE” in which the Cold War is the scene and that alone can influence people. Lastly, “SENSE” is the main theme in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots which encompasses your own understanding of the world around you.

I think it is fair to say these themes can be tied to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in some form. It could also be said that these themes could be tied to just about every film. However, it is clear that Kojima sees these themes within Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse giving us a very general sense of what we can expect from Death Stranding.

Death Stranding is sort of an enigma at this point. We have had multiple trailers flaunting its appealing and somewhat frightening visuals and yet we still have no idea what this thing is. It does seem everyone who sees it is in awe of Kojima’s upcoming project. From developer Guerilla Games to the synth-pop group CHVRCHES, they have all expressed how mind-blowing Death Stranding is.

Death Stranding is slated to release on PS4 but a concrete launch date has yet to be announced.
