In the days since Death Stranding has released, we’ve started to get a better picture of how the game has been selling in various regions around the world. Not only did the Kojima Productions-developed title get off to a strong start in the UK, but it seems as though it has performed quite well in Japan, too.

In its first week on the market in Japan, Death Stranding was able to sell 185,909 copies, which is very strong considering the size of the region. This put the game at the top-selling position in Japan on the week, surpassing that of Persona 5 Royal, which launched the week prior in Japan. While these numbers alone seem positive for Death Stranding, it turns out that the game broke a rather impressive record in Japan as well during its release week.

According to Game Data Library, a site that tracks game sales in Japan, Death Stranding had the best launch week sales of any new IP throughout this entire console generation. It beat out JudgmentSekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Bloodborne, the previous three biggest new IPs this generation in Japan, each by around 30,000 copies in its first week sales. It’s also apparently the biggest new IP as a whole since Dark Souls released all the way back in 2011.

The only game that seemingly surpassed the week one sales of Death Stranding as a new IP was, surprisingly, that of Knack. However, Knack’s week one sales come with a bit of a caveat, as the game was packaged with PS4 consoles when it released in 2013. This, in turn, skewed the sales data on Knack just a bit since it was coming for free with PS4 consoles in the region and therefore can’t be considered in the same way that a standalone release could.

We’ll have to wait a few more weeks to likely learn how Death Stranding has performed here in the United States, but if other regions are any indication, it likely is doing pretty well here, too. Until then, keep an eye out for our review of the game in the coming days.
