Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated games in recent memory due to CD PROJEKT RED’s history with critically-acclaimed titles such as The Witcher 3. Some say that the developers are on par with quality and effort put into games as their apparent competitors Rockstar Games, creators of Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.

In a recent earnings call to investors, CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński was asked about Cyberpunk 2077‘s quality and finesse; particularly in comparison to the recent Red Dead Redemption 2, which launched to incredibly overwhelming critical acclaim.

“Without a doubt, quality is of paramount importance.” Kiciński insists, continuing that the company strives “to publish games which are as refined as Red Dead Redemption 2, and recent Rockstar releases in general.”

In a moment of good sportsmanship, the CEO added that Red Dead Redemption 2 “is excellent, by the way, we are rooting for it. Rave reviews, excellent sales.”

The question that he responded to was quite a tough one at that, with the investor asking if the developer was aiming to get Cyberpunk 2077 to at least a Metacritic score of 95 at launch.

“Well, with The Witcher 3 the bugs took around 3 months to patch out after the release – from what I can remember – and the prevailing view seems to be that Red Dead Redemption was good enough on the day of release to merit that 97/100 score. Do you expect to be able to release Cyberpunk in a good enough state to score at least 95 points, or do you prioritize your release schedule?”

Kiciński offered a good response while also praising the success of Rockstar Games’ latest title. He went on to talk about how the future of video games is mostly for hit titles that gamers will disregard all the others in order to play, either due to loyalty or time constraints or sometimes both.

Whether or not 2077 will actually live up to its hype in the same way that Rockstar’s hit game did, we will have to see in time. For all we know Cyberpunk could be a next-generation game.
