Following the reveal of the first large chunk of gameplay of Squadron 42, the single-player campaign of Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium game also posted an alternate version including commentary from the developers.

The commentary is provided by Game Director Chris Roberts, Technical Director of Content Sean Tracy, and Lead Writer Dave Haddock, as they talk over every scene of the long gameplay sequence, explaining what’s happening and what the plans are to make things even better.

We learn that the team is still working on improving the already-impressive facial expressions, the navigation UI in flight, lighting, frame rate, combat both in flight and on the ground, and a lot more. Of course, we should not forget the innovative “mop tech.” While this sounds funny, it’s just another signal of what kind of attention to detail the team behind the game is pouring into every little thing.

One of the most interesting elements we hear about is just how “alive” the environment is, and how much freedom we’re given. For instance, instead of staying to talk with the captain, we could follow Mark Hamill’s character, and see him walk to the locker room, suit up and get ready for the flight. Basically, whatever we’re doing, things around keep happening whether we’re looking at them or not.

On top of this, we also get some more good news for backers, as alpha 3.0 has just been released for everyone who pledged for the game, letting us get the first glimpse of the planetary tech and much more directly on our computers.

Star Citizen is a crowdfunded project and the total tally has now reached $174,329,256, with 1,945,163 registered users. For the sake of full disclosure, the author of this article backed the game in 2012.
