Today Bandai Namco Entertainment released a sizable batch of direct feed 1080p screenshots showing its upcoming Souls-like JRPG Code Vein.

First of all, we get to see more of the game’s character creation, and more specifically the default female heroine, and a batch of customized examples. Players will be able to select a lot of different parameters including, gender, body, hair styles and the voice of the character.

We also learn about two characters.

“The young leader Louis really wants to help Revenants suffering from bloodlust. He ventures into the isolated land of VEIN looking for the source of Blood Beads to use it as a substitute for human blood. With his one-handed sword he is a swift attack expert and can elude with the armor type Ogre.

Io is a female Revenant who explores with the protagonists. She has no memories about her past but she knows very well VEIN. She will be extremely useful for the player character!”

The screenshots also showcase the battle system, that is very varied and offers a lot of options to players:

The Gift system allows players to use up to eight gifts during battle to temporarily increase attacks and defense actions. Some gifts are passive, and gained by using certain items or equipment without the need to activate them.

The Stamina Gauge will allow players to manage all of their actions including attacks, evasion, dashing and Drain. It’s very important to keep in mind the status of the stamina gauge to survive in the game.

A successful Drain action will increase the number of Ichor points and the Ichor stock. It’s possible to perform Special Drain, which will also cause massive damage to the enemy on top of increasing Ichor points and Ichor stock. A Special Drain can be activated after a successful parry done with perfect timing on an enemy attack, after a successful attack from the back, or after a combo attack.

The Focus System can temporarily increase the character’s abilities during battle. It activates as they receive or dodge attacks and when they’re surrounded by many enemies. Thanks to this system, players have a fighting chance in extreme situations and can get a power boost when they intentionally place themselves in dangerous situations.

Thanks to the Focus System it’s possible to negate attacks, increase damage dealt, and even throw enemies in the air to deliver aerial combos.

Last, but not least, Partner Actions can be executed together with companions that will flank enemies attacking them from the sides and rear, provide buffs, and even share health points when necessary.
