We’re nearing that time of the year where the first information on the upcoming fall’s release of Call of Duty usually starts popping up. While Activision has so far remained entirely silent about what it has in store for the franchise later this year, the first leaks of information have now started to show up.

In a new report from Eurogamer, it is said that the title of this year’s edition of the annualized franchise will be Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The information came from a known Call of Duty leaker named Okami and then was verified by Eurogamer’s own sources. This also lines up with previous reports and rumors that we’ve heard which have indicated that this year’s edition of CoD would indeed fall in the Black Ops sub-series.

As for other details about the project, the report goes on to state that Black Ops Cold War will be a sort of reset for the Black Ops brand and will take things back to the roots of the series in the 1960s. This is similar to how last year’s release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare seemed to hit the reset button on the MW series for the future.

All in all, what’s being laid out here isn’t surprising whatsoever, but I do have to say it’s not that exciting, personally. If the Call of Duty franchise is just going to continue to reset their most popular iterations in the long-running series rather than try to iterate or create something new, then that’s just not very interesting at all. We’re only 10 years removed from the original release of Black Ops but I guess now Activision feels the need to reboot it. While Modern Warfare, to their credit, was actually a solid entry in the series when it released last year, it’s still pretty disappointing to see the Call of Duty series move into a direction that is void of anything other than reliance on past success and nostalgia.

And as far as the title goes, well, it’s just kind of clunky. Something cleaner like Call of Duty: Cold War looks way nicer, but I can understand why Activision would want to stick with the Black Ops branding. This is all about money at the end of the day, and the Black Ops entries in the franchise always sell quite well. At the very least, I guess it’s better than Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII.

Anyway, chances are that we should begin hearing a whole lot more about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War here in the coming weeks and months, if I had to guess. We’ll keep you posted when Activision has more to say.

Until then, Call of Duty: Warzone is still free to play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One and continues to be one of the most popular games in the world right now.
