SNK published a new trailer for KOF 15, revealing fan-favorite Athena Asamiya and her new character design for the game.

Who is Athena Asamiya in KOF 15?

Athena Asamiya is one of the cutest and most recognizable SNK characters. She is voiced by Haruna Ikezawa, who also voices Kisara in Tales of Arise. If you’re new to The King of Fighters series, Athena Asamiya is a character with a completely new outfit and design in every single game. So many fans were awaiting her reveal in KOF 15. Personally speaking, I believed SNK would go even higher this time by introducing Athena as a VTuber. Turns out it’s not happening, yet.

Interestingly, Athena this time also has a Chinese-like outfit, just like Benimaru. Yet another extremely iconic and postcard character of the franchise is sporting a Chinese-styled outfit. This might be to further cement Shun’ei as the new protagonist.

How is this different than past games, why fans are hyped for Team Super Heroine?

Usually, in the story of every KOF game, Athena is part of Team Psycho Soldier. However, in KOF 15, she’s part of Team Super Heroine with Mai Shiranui and Yuri Sakazaki. Hinting at really interesting story elements.

The King of Fighters XV will launch in the first quarter of 2022, on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, and Windows 10). The previously revealed character was King of Dinosaurs. The game was delayed several times now, most notably because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Japan, like many other countries in the world, is still in a really bad place.

An alternate version of Athena Asamiya is also the Heroine of the Iori isekai light novel. An alternate version of Yuri also joins the party. There’s a manga adaptation you should definitely check out as well.
