Respawn Entertainment’s surprise 2019 Battle Royale Apex Legends might be fairly popular, but one thing that players have been wanting is a crossplay feature, allowing them to play against other players who are on other systems. It seems as if the feature is once again being teased, but there’s no confirmation that it’s actually on the way.

Dusty Welch, the COO of Respawn Entertainment was recently quoted in an interview with Game Informer magazine after being questioned about the status of a crossplay feature. “I think on crossplay we see it’s something that is kind of expected in the industry and is important to a game like ours,” he explains, “Chad [Chad Grenier, Game director at Respawn Entertainment] and I are obviously big fans of playing our game at work and in our free time — and we go home on a Friday or weekend and want to play with each other and we’re on different systems. On a personal level, yes, we’d love to do that and party up on the weekends. I think it’s an important thing to get to.”

While there’s no actual confirmation that crossplay is in development, or that there’s a future update hanging around waiting to be deployed, the fact Welch and Grenier want to bring crossplay to the game says something. Additionally, with the coronavirus causing lockdown around the world, with possible tighter lockdowns in places, employees may end up working from home for longer than anticipated, so I’d imagine the desire to play with your colleagues no matter your console would come in super handy around about now.

The crossplay feature has previously been teased back when the game originally launched. Respawn Entertainment stated, “We currently don’t support cross-platform play,” however clarified that the studio is “always working on new features and improvements”. And while crossplay would allow players to party up with others on different systems, it was confirmed that cross-progression, allowing players to carry their achievements and progression, would never be possible “due to the way systems were set up early on,”.

Hopefully, we do see a crossplay feature arrive for Apex Legends, especially since the game has been going in hard on the updates as of late, with Assimilation bringing a new legend, the Valentine’s Day Rendezvous Event, the System Override event, and the new The Old Way’s event that’s taking place this week.
