It seems most gamers have a love-hate relationship with damage numbers on-screen. While there is a distinct subsection that praises the arcade-y feel that these bring to games in the Xenoblade or Borderlands franchises, there is also a trend of on-screen minimalism and immersion that penetrates fanbases. Thankfully, EA is looking to cater to both of these audiences with “damage floaties” customization in their upcoming shared-world shooter, Anthem.

Let’s start off with the basics: what are damage floaties? Seen in the visuals below, floaties are the aptly-titled floating damage indicators in yellow when you damage an enemy:

This feature isn’t something that we personally found visually offensive in our preview of the game, but there is a growing call for customization options. Thankfully, as noted above, Electronic Arts (always looking to stay abreast of good PR in 2018) has responded to those concerns, letting players know that opacity, size, and even the existence of this feature can be turned off.

Taking it a step further, BioWare’s Executive Producer Mark Darrah gave some more insight into how this actually looks in Anthem. Seen in the Tweet below, we actually catch a glimpse of the customization options within the menu:

All in all, this is great for a visual perspective and a cool note when it comes to gameplay. However, there is still so much we would like to know about Anthem before making the plunge into it — like what exactly the story is going to look like. Aside from those concerns, EA has debuted a bunch of interesting news lately for the space-shooting game, including 20 minutes of gameplay footage and neat cosplay building videos.

Anthem will release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on February 22, 2019; for anyone looking to pick up the Legion of Dawn Edition (packed in armor and weapon packs, a Javelin gear attachment, and the digital soundtrack), the pack is available now on Amazon.
