A Plague Tale: Innocence was first teased back in early 2017, but today we finally learned when the game will be arriving. To coincide with the start of a new behind the scenes webseries, Asobo Studio and Focus Home Interactive announced that A Plague Tale: Innocence will be releasing on May 14.

While we did see gameplay back during E3 2018, this webseries is the first true deep dive into several aspects of the game by Asobo Studio and Focus Home Interactive. This first episode is title Roots of Innocence and features several of the game’s developers doing a good job at easing players into A Plague Tale: Innocence’s world and characters. In case you aren’t aware, A Plague Tale: Innocence focuses on siblings Amicia and Hugo, with the former doing her best to protect herself and her brother in a harsh 14th Century France ravaged by the Black Plague.

The developers begin the video by giving a brief overview of the plot before delving into why they made certain creative decisions. Both Amicia and Hugo were actually designed with softer, pretty faces to contrast heavily with the dark and disgusting world of A Plague Tale: Innocence. The also touch on some of the other characters players will meet. Overall though, as the game’s title suggests, the main focus is on childhood innocence within a harsh reality.

To make sure this came across, the developers actually worked with child actors. The main two highlighted in this video are Charlotte McBurney and Logan Hannan, the young voice actors behind Amicia and Hugo, respectively. The game’s writers actually point out how difficult it can be to write dialogue for young character, though this process was actually made easier by the ideas of some of the child actors.

If you’re wondering why the game isn’t releasing on Nintendo Switch, the answer is fairly simple: too many rats.
