Since its reveal earlier this year, Gris from developer Nomada Studio immediately gave players the indication that it would be a striking and emotional journey with beautiful artwork, and now Devolver Digital has lifted a bit more of the curtain back on the anticipated indie game at its launch.
Right before the game’s release later this week, publisher Devolver Digital has shared some of the initial concept artwork and designs for Gris from developer Nomada Studio, giving a good indication of what to expect from the narrative-driven and stunningly-beautiful puzzle platformer.
Gris will release for Nintendo Switch and PC on December 13, 2018. For a closer look, you can check out some of the early designs and artwork from Devolver Digital below:
GRIS launches soon and we thought it might be neat to take a look at bits from @NomadaStudioBCN‘s original pitch for the game that swept us off our feet. pic.twitter.com/SGyfijblz5

GRIS’s art style was incredible from the very first page of the pitch, @ConradRoset‘s style was unlike anything we’d seen in a game before. This was the first image in the presentation and set the tone for all that followed. pic.twitter.com/gGQX0PEgm3

Another striking part of the pitch was the use of the dress in gameplay and progression – some have been cropped here for spoilers. It was s simple ideal executed well and fit really well with the tone of the game. pic.twitter.com/8PTpH6jMDN

Another mechanic that was present in the game from the very start – truly beautiful in motion in the final game. pic.twitter.com/2JIYTbRNvK

The relationship between the subtle narrative, how it changes the world around Gris, and her ability to access new areas was also an important part of the original pitch. pic.twitter.com/yBiNUT60cU

Level design concepts were beautifully illustrated via compressed paintings of each area, showing how players would traverse it and the unique architecture that set them apart. pic.twitter.com/jciI6S4Ev7

While there are no true enemies in the game or real ‘failure states’ @NomadaStudioBCN made it clear there were big ‘boss’ moments in the game that would instill fear and anxiety in the player. pic.twitter.com/xY3YHl461F

The pitch from @NomadaStudioBCN really was outstanding and is as good of a presentation as we’ve ever seen – clear, concise, and well thought out. Our team can’t wait to share such a brilliant game with everyone on December 13! pic.twitter.com/bpipU00J1d
