With its release last week, Sony and Naughty Dog finally gave fans the long-awaited follow-up they’ve been waiting for with The Last of Us Part II. The sequel has already hit tremendously on a critical scale, and so far, it seems that Part II is also on track to be a major financial success with a big sales milestone at launch.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony has announced that The Last of Us Part II has surpassed over 4 million copies sold (as of June 21) within its first week of release, though didn’t specify whether that is between physical, digital, or both. This also makes the title the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever, achieving a higher first week of sales than the PS4’s previous record holders, God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Alongside the announcement of the sales milestone by Sony, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann (and lead director on The Last of Us Part II) shared a message on the game’s achievements so far:

We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar.

The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog. We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone.

Given that it was the follow-up to one of the most acclaimed titles of the last generation, it isn’t a huge surprise that The Last of Us Part II is already off to a great start sales-wise. However, in light of the game’s delays and the initial uncertainty of its release due complications that arose from the coronavirus pandemic, it’s still an impressive achievement and is likely an incentive for Naughty Dog to explore how it could continue telling Ellie’s story down the line.

The Last of Us Part II is available now exclusively on PS4.
