Level-5 revealed the very first trailer for the new Yo-kai Watch game, Yo-kai Academy Y: Waiwai Gakuen Seikatsu, explaining a certain aspect of the game in detail for the first time. Like its name suggests, this game mixes RPG with school life elements. This trailer focuses on the school life part. Yo-kai Academy Y‘s trailer is embedded further below, and here’s a summary of what it says.
The trailer explains how Yo-Kai Academy Y is an “Academy City”, with every facility needed to live from shops to lodging. The school also has over 400 different clubs, each focusing on activities the students can focus on to hone themselves and aim for perfection. Students can join any of these to discover their hidden talents.
This is a concept pushed to the extreme, as Yo-Kai Academy Y also basically has an approved Student Mafia, formed by delinquents. The Student Mafia is approved by the academy’s top brass because “committing mistakes is also a way to learn”. In counterpart, there’s a Student Police trying to keep the peace in the Academy. Both groups are in opposition and fight each other. This means banchou and sukeban characters are featured in the Student Mafia of Yo-Kai Academy Y, so that definitely piqued my interest. Needless to say, that’s the side I’d join. I sure hope the academy doesn’t have a police brutality problem like it definitely would in real life.
Next up, the trailer explains how similarly to some kind of democracy, power and influence at Yo-Kai Academy Y is divided between three leaders of three different institutions, the Student Council President (black haired boy), the Academy Director, and the Public Morals Committee Chairman (white haired girl).
Lastly, the trailer hints at the presence of Yo-kai and supernatural elements in the academy. We’ll learn more on these RPG elements at a later date, most probably via the game’s official site.
Personally speaking, I’m not really sold or anything on the game yet. We still have yet to see further details on the game systems, so it’s too soon to tell. I’ll be sure to keep covering the game if time permits.
Yo-kai Academy Y is scheduled to launch in Summer 2020 in Japan, on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The game will be downloadable digitally, and regular frequent updates will be adding new content to the game. Updates will be free and mostly monthly. Most notably, multiplayer will be added via a free update after release.. It’s TBA for now if a physical version will be sold, and no price was shared yet.

The latest released Yo-kai Watch game is Yo-kai Watch 4 ++, available on PS4 and Switch in Japan. It’s the enhanced version of Yo-Kai Watch 4, first launched on Switch. It’s available as DLC for those with the base game.
Yo-kai Watch 4 ++ is the first Yo-kai Watch game ever releasing outside Nintendo consoles, and now Yo-kai Academy Y follows suit. It shows how Level-5 is switching its strategy after the huge decline the Yo-kai Watch franchise suffered from.
Yo-kai Watch 4 was announced in the west with no release date. Yo-kai Gakuen Y wasn’t announced in the west yet. As a side but related note, Inazuma Eleven: Heroes Great Road is still in development and is scheduled to launch in “probably 2021”. Akihiro Hino said so on a news post published April 1st.
