Wolfenstein: Youngblood Developer Says the Game is Lengthier than Past Entries

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is set to release this coming summer and unlike past Wolfenstein installments, this entry will allow you to play with a buddy in co-op. While this multiplayer aspect of the game is easily what separates it the most from past titles in the series, it seems that this isn’t where the differences in Youngblood will be ending.

In a new AMA thread over Reddit, developers from MachineGames talked a bit more about Wolfenstein: Youngblood and answered fan questions about the title. One fan, in particular, ended up asking about the length of Youngblood and in response received a rather lengthy description from MachineGames’ Jerk Gustafsson about how the game will be structured.

Youngblood is different than our previous titles in many ways,” Gustafsson said. “Player progression is level-based and the game structure is non-linear, which means the experience is player directed in a way that we’ve never done before where players will be able to perform missions in any order they please,” he explains. This format is very different from Wolfenstein games in recent years that advance you through the story on a level by level basis.

Furthermore, Gustafsson went on to say that because of this difference in how Youngblood is formatted, it leads to an experience that is lengthier than both previous mainline Wolfenstein games. “And while the storyline/campaign may be a bit lighter than New Order/New Colossus, the total gameplay time of Youngblood will exceed those titles,” he said.

We still haven’t seen a whole lot of Wolfenstein: Youngblood in action, but everything that Gustafsson describes here sounds really cool to me. I’ve been sold on the simple co-op idea of Youngblood since it was first announced but knowing that MachineGames is going to experiment even further with this spin-off is intriguing. I’m wondering if any of the ideas that they’re toying around with here could be implemented into Wolfenstein 3.

We’ll likely see more of Wolfenstein: Youngblood as we approach E3 next month. The game is due out in just a couple months on July 26 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.
