It’s taken a long time to come about, but Ubisoft is finally developing Beyond Good and Evil 2. While the long-awaited and highly-anticipated sequel to the 2003 classic took over a decade to finally enter development, Ubisoft’s CEO recently explained a bit about why the company thought it was the right time to bring the series back.

Speaking to IGN, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently talked about Beyond Good and Evil 2’s director Michel Ancel and how he began the project. Contrary to what many probably expected, the sequel wasn’t one that Ancel had to pitch to Ubisoft. According to Guillemot, it was one that Ubisoft approached Ancel about finally making it.

Following work on games like Rayman OriginsRayman LegendsPeter Jackson’s King Kong, and another project that never saw the light of day, Guillemot says Ubisoft asked Ancel about finally making Beyond Good and Evil 2. “We convinced him that it could be the right time but he was able to, in working on it, to come up with something that was very impressive. So then all the planets were aligned and all the teams were ready to work with him on this project,” Guillemot said.

When asked about how the current development of Beyond Good and Evil 2 was also coming about, Guillemot had nothing but positive things to say. “I spoke with Michel actually last week about it to see where it was going; what we should move in one direction or another. We see the potential of this universe is fantastic and Michel is really passionate about it,” he said. “It’s going to be fantastic, I think.”

While we haven’t see Beyond Good and Evil 2 in quite a bit, it seems likely that Ubisoft will opt to finally show off more of the game this summer during E3 2019. Last we heard, Ancel was aiming for a playable beta of the game to be released in late 2019 but we haven’t learned of any further confirmation of this since last year.

As of now, Beyond Good and Evil 2 still doesn’t have a release date or scheduled platforms that it will be releasing on.
