In a surprise release yesterday, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales landed on the Nintendo Switch. So essentially, it’s more Witcher news to surround the plethora of Witcher news we’re seeing since Netflix’s live-action series launched in December 2019.

Developed by CD Projekt Red Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a spin-off title, taking the Gwent card game that’s playable as a mini-game in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The game was given its own single-player standalone title that launched in 2018 and made its way to not only PC but Xbox One and PS4.

In October 2018, CD Projekt Red stated that they had no plans to launch the game onto the Nintendo Switch. However, since then, we’ve seen the complete edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt land on the Switch, and now this surprise launch. Originally, it was due to launch in 2017, but was delayed to 2018 with the developer stating, “shifting release windows is always something we approach seriously, we’ll never hesitate to do it if we feel you’ll get a better game as a result.”

I’ve never actually understood Gwent from my time with it inside The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but now that Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales has landed on the Switch, I might have to see about picking it up and learning it through the magic of the Switch.

You can pick Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales up on Xbox One, PC, PS4, or Nintendo Switch.
