Have you ever played the original Super Mario Bros. on NES thinking, “you know what would make this better? If I could play as Link from The Legend of Zelda!” If you haven’t, I’m with you. But if you have, you’re in luck. The next Super Mario Maker 2 update will add Link’s Master Sword, which transforms you into everyone’s favorite Hylian.

Featured in a new video for the Super Mario Maker 2 update “ver. 2,” the Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda is an item you can add to your custom build levels. When you grab the sword, Mario will turn into Link. Yes, you can use the Master Sword on classic Super Mario enemies, as well as the shield to block fireballs and other projectiles. Additionally, you will be able to use Link’s dash attack, downward thrust, bow and arrow, and bombs.

Link’s abilities do some interesting things to change up the typical Super Mario gameplay. Shooting arrows with your bow can be done at different angles, letting you hit objects that were unreachable as Mario. The downward thrust can be done to spiked enemies, allowing you to take them out without taking damage. Lastly, the bombs can be used to destroy “indestructible” blocks.

It should be noted that the Master Sword can only be used in the Super Mario Bros. game style. So, you won’t be able to use it in Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3, or any other game style available in the game.

While the Master Sword is arguably the most noteworthy addition to the new Super Mario Maker 2 update. Here is a list of all the new course parts and other additions coming with the ver. 2 update:

  • Spike (all game styles)
  • Pokey (all game styles)
  • Frozen Coin (Not available in Super Mario 3D World game style)
  • P Block (all game styles)
  • Dash Block (Only available in Super Mario 3D World game style)

Lastly, a new mode called Ninji Speedruns will be available to play. Featuring new levels created by Nintendo, Ninji Speedruns are essentially time trials where you compete with other players around the world to get the fastest time. Player ghosts are in the form of Ninjis and can be seen as you play through one of the courses. Clearing courses will earn you stamps, and special Mii costumes. If you have one of the top times, you will have gold stars circle your Mii character for a bit of time. Since this is technically online, you will need a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

The new Super Mario Maker 2 update will be available to download on December 5 for free. If you need help installing the update, Nintendo customer support has your back.
