PS5 Controller Potentially Revealed via New Patent

DualShock 5, News, Originals, PlayStation, PS4, PS5, Sony

While Sony has yet to formally reveal just what the PS5 will look like, images of the console’s dev kit design have previously leaked online via patents. Now, it looks as though the same thing has happened for the PS5’s new controller, the DualShock 5.

Spotted by VGC, the Japanese Patent Office recently updated and contained a new submission from Sony potentially showing off the DualShock 5 controller. As seen from image mockups, the PS5 controller looks very similar to the DualShock 4 model which is currently used in tandem with the PS4. The biggest changes for Sony’s next controller seem to come in the way of an added microphone, a remodeled touchpad, larger triggers, smaller thumbsticks, and the removal of the light bar. It also boasts a new charging format via USB-C cables instead of the DualShock 4’s micro USB format.

You can see a comparison between the DualShock 4 and potential DualShock 5 model here:

All in all, most of the changes seem relatively minor, but that’s not a bad thing. For my money, the DualShock 4 is one of the best controllers currently available and I’m not all that eager for the design to change with the PS5.

Still, I do think the removal of the light bar is a bit strange, especially for PS VR applications. The light bar was integral to many VR games on PS4, making me question whether or not the current PS VR headset will be making the transition to PS5 or not. Or, perhaps Sony will have a new way to track movement in VR games on the PS5 instead. This all still remains to be seen.

Obviously, don’t take these images from the patent filing as gospel just yet. The design of the controller for the PS5 could change a bit between now and release. That said, what we’re seeing here does line up with what we’ve heard about the new controller previously, so it seems like a good bet to expect this to be the final design.

The PS5 is set to release at an undetermined date next year in Holiday 2020.
