In a move that is meant to help many around the globe stay inside and prevent the spread of the lingering coronavirus pandemic, Sony has today announced initiative that it’s calling “Play at Home.”

Revealed via SIE President Jim Ryan over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony is looking to give away a handful of titles over the coming weeks to help make things easier for those staying at home. Specifically, starting tomorrow on April 15, Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and thatgamecompany’s critcially-acclaimed Journey will be available to download on PS4 free of charge. This promotion will last until early next month on May 5.

“People all over the world are doing the right thing by staying home to help contain the spread of COVID–19. We are deeply grateful to everyone practicing physical distancing and take our responsibility as a home entertainment platform seriously, so we are asking our community to continue supporting the safe choice and the need to Play At Home,” Ryan wrote in the blog post. “As a thank you to all who are doing their part to lessen the impact of this pandemic, Sony Interactive Entertainment is pleased to announce the Play At Home initiative.

While giving away these free games is likely the most notable aspect of the Play at Home program, PlayStation also has a secondary aspect that is dedicated to helping out indie devs who might be feeling financial stress during these trying times.

“Independent developers are vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community and we understand the hardships and financial struggles that many smaller gaming studios are facing. With that, SIE has developed a fund to support them during this time. We have earmarked $10 million to support our independent development partners,” Ryan explained. “More information about the fund, including participation criteria, will be made available soon.”

All in all, it’s really cool to see one of the video game industry’s platform holders step up to help not only consumers who might be stuck at home, but also those indie devs that might be struggling more now than many others. Good on you for taking the lead with this, PlayStation.
