Paul Heyman, the self-described greatest advocate in WWE, took to the internet today and helped reveal some of the modes and features coming to WWE 2K Battlegrounds. The game is an arcade take on wrestling and the modes on offer reflect that. Sure, there are your basic exhibition matches, but the stakes are raised in things like King of the Battleground. Give Heyman’s hype video a watch below for an overview of what’s coming.

The flagship mode for most people looking to pick up WWE 2K Battlegrounds is likely the campaign mode. This single-player story mode tasks you (along with some help from Heyman and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin) with building up a brand new WWE promotion. You’ll travel the world building up your stable of wrasslers. The story is told through comic book-like cutscenes. Which, if I’m being honest, makes me want a WWE visual novel. But I digress.

Outside of a somewhat promising career mode, fans have a plethora of multiplayer modes to hop into. Whether you’re jumping into an 8-person King of the Battleground or taking your custom created Superstar to the top of the card in the Battleground Challenge mode, there’s plenty to do.

Of course, all of these modes can only take the game so far. I’ll reserve judgment for when I get my hands on the game. That said, the footage they’ve shown so far doesn’t have me too excited. Hopefully, the “over-the-top action” feels great. However, given the state WWE games have been in for quite a while, it’s fair to go in with a heavy dose of skepticism.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds launches September 18 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
