Daily life continues to take hit after hit due to the coronavirus pandemic, and with New York City on the cusp of lockdown, one of its major attractions made the call to close its door for a while.

Nintendo NY announced Monday night through its social media channels that it will be closed for the “foreseeable future,” citing ongoing developments with the pandemic and concern for the health and safety of its employees and patrons.

Located in Rockefeller Plaza, Nintendo NY stands out as one of the more unique shops around, serving as both a Nintendo-specific game store and an official hub for all things from Animal Crossing to Zelda.

The two-story space has also become a rallying point of sorts in the last few years, with fans gathering at the store any time there’s a Nintendo Direct or a major game release.

The statement issued Monday night left no timetable for when the store might reopen. “We will continue to work with health experts and follow their lead, and as soon as we have a date set to reopen, we will notify you,” it read.

Although citizens, medical personnel, and local officials have been doing all they can, the U.S. (and the rest of the world) remains in a tough spot as it tries to contain and combat the virus. Cities across the country have taken sweeping measures to keep people at home in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading. New York state specifically has shut down its schools, gyms, theaters, and the dine-in services for its bars and restaurants as confirmed cases in the state approach 1,000.

“We care about the health and safety of all of you and our employees, and we appreciate your understanding,” the Nintendo NY statement read. “We look forward to a time when Nintendo NY can once again be a place that we all gather to celebrate gaming, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.”

With the way things have been going, the situation looks like it’s going to get worse before it starts getting any better. Find solace wherever you can in the meantime.
