The statement clarifies that the company has “entered into an agreement to acquire 100% of the outstanding shares of Next Level Games Inc. and make it a wholly-owned subsidiary). As said before, the developer has had an intimate relationship with Nintendo in recent years that it seems as though with the success of specifically Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi’s Mansion 3, the company has decided to officially put them under their first-party umbrella. Previously, Next Level games also developed Super Mario Strikers, Mario Strikers Charged, and Punch-Out!!!
According to Nintendo, the decision to purchase the developer was decided after shareholders wanted to sell their stock. In Nintendo’s statement, Furukawa says “A number of owner-directors recently determined that the time is right for them to sell their shares, and NLG therefore began exploring potential sale transactions. He continues, “Completion of the Acquisition will serve to secure the availability of NLG development resources for Nintendo, including development expertise, as well as facilitate an anticipated improvement in development speed and quality by enabling closer communication and exchange of staff with the Nintendo development team.”
The acquisition makes Next Level Games, Nintendo’s seventh first-party studio. The deal is set to close on March 1st later this year.
