Horizon Zero Dawn PC launch is fast approaching this week with the release of the critically acclaimed title from Guerrilla Games releasing on Steam August 7. With this being a big week for the action role-playing title staring the hunter Aloy, Titan Comics has also dropped its #1 comic issue of the series today. Fans of the game will be able to follow Talanah, a strong and determined hunter who struggles to find purpose after her trusted friend Aloy disappears. When a mysterious threat emerges in the wilds, she sets out to hunt and to defeat it, only to learn that a whole new breed of killer machines stalk the land.

I got my hands on a review copy of the comic and dove in to explore the world told in a wonderful graphic novel. As expected, the first issue isn’t very long and can be read in roughly 10 minutes or less. The comic begins after the events of the game where everything seems to have settled into the new world but the hunt is on for a new and dangerous breed of machine. As Talanah is out stalking a machine called a Clawstriders, she becomes overwhelmed by it and ends up getting pretty banged up. Passing out from her injuries, Talanah awakens in a strange cave to find herself bandaged up and enough medicine and food to last her awhile. Not knowing who took care of her, Talanah decides to head out in spite of her painful and still healing wound.

Whilst finding her way back home, Talanah stumbles across a young and naive boy who finds himself in a spot of trouble, and just as things seem like they are going south, a mysterious man appears. A little further on, Talanah starts to tell the story about an encounter she and Aloy had with a new breed of machine with black armor with the very last page ending on a cliffhanger. I really enjoyed this short but sweet introduction into the Horizon Zero Dawn comics that provided just enough information to allow me to have a taste of this world and eager enough to want to pick up issue two.

The art by Ann Maulina was beautifully bright and bold and the narrative by Anne Toole is functional enough for a setup to the next chapter. Hopefully, as the story progresses, the characters found in issue one will be fleshed out more and we get to see their complete makeup and what they can bring to the story. For those who haven’t played the game, the comic does somewhat rely on the reader to have background knowledge of Horizon Zero Dawn‘s world but for those who haven’t played it yet, I can highly recommend jumping into the game on PS4 or when it launches this Friday on PC.

Horizon Zero Dawn #1 is available today at comic book retailers worldwide and digital devices for $3.99. You can order from your local comic shopForbidden Planet, or ComiXology.
