Ghost of Tsushima May Have Been a Pirate Game

The latest PS4 first-party game is out in the wild, so I imagine most of you are diving headfirst into Ghost of Tsushima. But hey — while we are talking about ‘diving’ and Ghost of Tsushima, did you know there was a chance that the samurai epic was instead going to be a pirate game? Neither did we, until developer Sucker Punch Productions’ Co-Founder Brian Fleming in a recent dev blog.

Posting on the PlayStation Blog to celebrate the release of Ghost of Tsushima, Fleming wanted to describe Sucker Punch’s journey to creating the game — beginning from the end of development of inFamous First Light. While the team knew early on that they wanted to build “a large, open-world experience” featuring melee combat, they weren’t yet sure about the form that would take.

According to Fleming, this led the team to explore a number of concepts across different cultural paths — including the option of a pirate game. Other possibilities also included a Rob Roy (Scottish outlaw) or a Three Muskateer game. And, honestly, all of those sound amazing. If Sucker Punch is ever looking to move on from the samurai IP, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to test out some of those properties.

Apart from that spurt of information, the blog post shows some of the conceptual and technological speedbumps that Sucker Punch had to overcome. It’s a great read, showing how even some of the best development studios need to expand their skillsets when it comes to creating a game that is unique and special to their other projects.

In other Ghost of Tsushima news, the US audience is being incredibly under-served when it comes to the box art — as made evident from some of the amazing box art coming out of Slovakia. Also, if you haven’t downloaded it already, make sure to grab the free samurai PS4 theme available now.

Ghost of Tsushima is available now, exclusively on the PS4. If you haven’t picked up the game yet and are looking to build up your samurai swag, the Collector’s Edition is still available to purchase on Amazon.
