When the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced last month that E3 2020 was officially canceled, it was said that other plans were in motion to host a sort of “online experience to showcase industry announcements and news in June 2020.” Well, a few weeks later, and those plans as well have now been canned, too.

The ESA recently sent over a statement to PC Gamer making clear that this online experience will no longer be transpiring. “Given the disruption brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be presenting an online E3 2020 event in June. Instead, we will be working with exhibitors to promote and showcase individual company announcements, including on www.E3expo.com, in the coming months,” the statement read. “We look forward to bringing our industry and community together in 2021 to present a reimagined E3 that will highlight new offerings and thrill our audiences.”

It’s important to note that this online experience that the ESA was originally planning has nothing to do with the digital showings that separate publishers have already stated they’ll be holding in the coming months. Microsoft, Devolver Digital, and Ubisoft are among those publishers that have said they’ll be holding digital events in the future to talk more about upcoming games and happenings. As of this writing, though, none of these aforementioned publishers have announced specific dates as to when these showing could occur.

As for E3 in the future, well, the show will be returning in 2021 and is tentatively set to take place from June 15 through the 17th. For now, the ESA has yet to officially confirm that these are the dates for E3 2021, however. More news will likely come about regarding the future of the convention soon.
