Recently, director of the hotly anticipated DOOM Eternal, Marty Stratton, sat down with Metro to discuss the upcoming shooter. One particular comment of note was when Metro asked Stratton about a small little title, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and whether or not we’d see the gruesome Doom Slayer making an appearance as a new fighter.

Stratton was upfront, stating that they have heard the rumors and have even asked the parties-that-be at Nintendo for Doom Slayer to be included in Smash Ultimate. Stratton admits though that while they have asked, it has more been playful banter between Bethesda and Nintendo. A great relationship has come about during their work on the Switch port of DOOM, showing that the companies can clearly work together.

Seeing Doom Slayer go toe-to-toe with the likes of Solid Snake and Mario on a demon-infested Mars battleground would be quite the sight. The idea of this character’s inclusion exploded in popularity after the reveal of Persona 5’s Joker. Joker coming to Smash seemed to announce to the world that the pool of possible DLC characters was going to be much wider.

Stratton may say that id Software hasn’t formally been asked by Nintendo to include the Doom Slayer as a character, but that’s exactly what someone who has been asked about such a thing would say. With Smash Ultimate’s Fighters Pass 1 coming to its finale next week with Byleth, we will have to wait until December 2021 when Fighters Pass 2 wraps up to know for sure whether or not Stratton is tricking us.

Recently, our very own Ryan Meitzler got to check out DOOM Eternal ahead of release. If you’re itching to know what some of the big changes are between Eternal and DOOM 2016, he has you covered. Ryan also put together a great piece going over some of the new story bits you can look forward to when you get your hands on the game on March 20. We also were able to capture 15 minutes of gameplay, that you can enjoy, too.

DOOM Eternal will launch in March on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but the Nintendo Switch version will be coming a bit further down the road.
