In an interview with Destructoid, the creator of Celeste, Matt Thorson said that the game was a hit on the Nintendo Switch eShop:

“The Switch version of Celeste has sold the most, and that’s what we were expecting. We feel like Celeste and the Switch are a perfect fit for each other. We are glad we launched on all consoles though, and we really appreciate the support we’ve seen across the board.”

We’ve seen a multitude of indie titles find surprising amounts of success on Nintendo’s handheld-hybrid console. It’ll be interesting to see if they can keep the momentum going into 2018 as more games come to the device. At the end of January, the Switch had reportedly reached over 13 million units sold, meaning that it has outsold the Wii U in less than a year on the market.

For further comparison, the PS4 sold-through roughly 14.4 million units in its first year, although it’s important to note that markets change over time and the Switch doesn’t have much competition whereas the PS4 was going head to head with Xbox One at the time.

Nintendo has reportedly shipped almost 15 million Switch units, and they expect that number to rise to around almost 18 million by March, which would be no easy feat in just a year.

Celeste is a platformer from the creator of Towerfall: Ascension. The game is available right now on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac, and Linux. You can also check out our review.
