This afternoon, Microsoft announced the suite of games available to Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers for the month of August. This comes following widespread rumors that Microsoft might be pulling the plug on Xbox Live or that it might be absorbed into Game Pass after Microsoft pulled 1-year Xbox Live Gold pre-paid subscription cards from store shelves. All things considered, Microsoft doesn’t seem to be doing their best to sell users on the multiplayer subscription service.

Of the games available to Xbox Live Gold members, two are Xbox One games and two are from the Original Xbox. Portal Knights, the Minecraft lookalike RPG survival game is available from August 1 to August 31, Override: Mech City Brawl, the mech-based arena fighter, is available from August 16 to September 15, Rainbow Studios’ motocross racing game, MX Unleashed is available to download from August 1 to August 15 and rounding out the list is Volition’s Red Faction II, an FPS from the early 2000’s.

This lineup feels incredibly lackluster next to Sony’s PlayStation Plus games lineup for this August. Sony’s now 10-year-old service features the already massively popular battle royale, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, which just entered into beta this past weekend, and the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign remaster, which features some of the genre’s most iconic levels and set pieces, like the infamous ‘No Russian’ mission.

While August’s Xbox Live Gold offerings might not have all that much to offer, Microsoft is proud of the lineup’s “over 2000 in Gamerscore,” and “$79.96 value.” For more news about Xbox, including our impressions and coverage of the most recent Xbox Games Showcase, which debuted Halo Infinite gameplay, click here.
