Sony Interactive Entertainment has just announced that over 1 billion software titles have been sold worldwide for the PS4. This accounts only for games sold through retailers and the PlayStation Store, not including downloadable content. This total also includes games of all kinds, not just those from Sony’s first-party studios.

The actual amount of software that has been sold is closer to 1.181 billion, with over 274 million games being sold last year alone. Looking at sales data provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the PS4 is now the second-highest seller of games. Topped only by the PS2, there is little chance of the PS4 catching up to its staggering 1.53 billion units sold.

The same can be said for console sales – the PS4 has only sold 102.8 million compared once again to the PS2’s 155 million. That being said, the PS4 has consistently outperformed its predecessor. The PS3 has sold 87.4 million consoles and 999.4 million games according to the latest data.

Looking over to Nintendo, Sony’s sales performance seems to dominate for this console generation. Once again, the PS4 has sold 102.8 million over its lifetime. But the Switch, which launched almost 3 years ago,  has sold 52 million units, nearly half of the PS4’s. The latest numbers also estimate that Microsoft has sold 46 million Xbox One consoles so far.

If you’re looking more towards the future of the PlayStation family, Sony recently registered a trademark for the PS5. You can read about that here. Of course, we’ll let you know as soon as more information on the PS5 comes out.
