Today, Nintendo revealed the most recent sales figures for both the Switch and the available software for the device and the numbers for each continue to be pretty impressive.
As of December 31, 2018, the Switch has now collectively sold 32.27 million units worldwide. The holiday season was especially good to Nintendo in 2018 as the last update we had on the console in terms of sales was back at the end of September where the unit number was sitting close to 23 million. Basically, Nintendo was able to sell-in nearly 10 million Switch units in the final three months of the year, a feat that was no doubt aided by the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Another important thing to note is that despite the strong sales, Nintendo has now internally dropped its projections for Switch sales through the end of its fiscal year. Nintendo now expects sales to reach 17 million in total for its fiscal year rather than the 20 million it was once aiming for.
And for comparison sake, Switch is now less than one million units away from also passing the lifetime sales of the Nintendo 64. It’s safe to say the device’s first two years on the market have been quite the success.
On the software front, Switch has now collectively sold 163.61 million units of software. Of that number, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has the most sales and now sits at 15.02 million copies sold. Super Mario Odyssey, which was previously the platform’s best-selling title, now sits at 13.76 million. By far the most staggering of all these numbers though is that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has already become the Switch’s third best-selling game and in total sold 12.08 million copies in less than one month. That’s a rate of selling nearly half a million copies per day to end 2018. Smash Ultimate has already surpassed the lifetime sales of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which now sits at 11.68 million and also beat out the combined sales of Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee which together have sold 10 million units.
All in all, the past quarter for Nintendo was more than stellar and it’ll be interesting to see how they can end their fiscal year through these next couple of months. Switch seems to be here to stay and it’ll likely continue to have a major 2019 with even more big-name games on the horizon.
