Nintendo Switch has proven itself to be a massive success after the flop that was the Wii U. While it hasn’t matched the success of the Wii or PS4, it may very well be on its way to doing so. Today, Nintendo released its financial results for the second quarter of this fiscal year, and as such the sales numbers for the company’s systems and games were updated. Through this, we learned that the Nintendo Switch has sold 41.67 million units in the two and a half years it has been on the market.

This means the system is neck and neck with current sales estimates for the Xbox One, though Microsoft does not share that system’s sales numbers publicly, and above systems like the SEGA Genesis and Nintendo 64. It’s also catching up to the SNES, which has sold 49.1 million units. Considering the Nintendo Switch has several years left on the market, it will almost certainly pass that. The next Nintendo console to beat then would be the original NES at 61.91 million units sold.

It makes sense that Nintendo would have shipped 5 million Switch units in the last quarter alone as it has been a busy period for the console. On the hardware side of things, it received both a new model with improved battery life and the Nintendo Switch Lite released as well. When it comes to software, notable games like Astral Chain, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses released while Super Mario Maker 2 had time to get more popular.

Nintendo’s investor site confirms that Super Mario Maker 2 has sold 3.93 million copies, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is at 3.13 million copies sold, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses has topped 2.29 million in unit sales. Titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continue to be super successful as well, selling 19.01 units and 15.71 units, respectively.

With even more games coming out this fall, Nintendo seems like it has another strong quarter ahead of itself. Of course, DualShockers will keep you updated the next time Nintendo shares its financial results. If you want to pick up the system, it is currently available on Amazon.
