Today, during a Nintendo Direct presentation, the house of Mario and Square Enix introduced the features exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI.

We get to see the two gameplay modes created for the platforms: the more modern 3D mode shows the world and combat with better visuals. The classic and notsalgic 2D mode is designed to remind of the Dragon Quest games of old, with random encounters and no characters on screen during battles.

Event scenes are also showcased differently depending on the gameplay mode used. 3D mode includes Jump, while 2D mode does not.

It’s possible to switch between the two versions at a camp, and in 3D mode it’s possible to ride defeated monsters and use their traversal features like flying and walking on walls.

The video also shows how the StreetPass feature will work. It includes a special dungeon named The Labyrinth of Time, that can be played in cooperation with a party of eight players playing eight Yotchizoku. Defeating Door Guardian monsters will grant a “World of Adventure” scrolls that can be presented to the Elder unlock nostalgic levels set in the past of the series.

As expected, absolutey nothing was shown of the previously-teased but still-mysterious Nintendo Switch version of the game, which apparently Square can’t yet talk about, due to “adult circumstances.”

You can check out the full video below, and if you want to see more, you can also watch some more gameplay from the PS4 and 3DS versions, some recent images showing magic and a village, and more showcasing the casino and quests.

Dragon Quest XI will be released in Japan on July 29th for PS4 and 3DS.
