While Bandai Namco Entertainment took a risk in developing a more hardcore and traditional fighting game with the Dragon Ball license, their efforts have seemed to pay off. The official Japanese account for Dragon Ball games revealed today that Dragon Ball FighterZ for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch has sold 3.5 million copies, including digital sales, since it launched to critical acclaim back in January.

If you can remember, the weekend Dragon Ball FighterZ launched in was a fairly busy one. It launched alongside great titles like Monster Hunter: World and Celeste, but has managed to hold its own and sell well. Going off previous sales numbers for Dragon Ball games, Dragon Ball FighterZ is currently tied with Dragon Ball Z: Budokai as the second best-selling Dragon Ball  game at 3.5 million units.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse is still the top dog at 5 million copies sold, but Dragon Ball FighterZ does have the potential to pass it if it continues to do well. We aren’t even a year out of launch yet. DualShockers will be sure to let you know if that milestone is passed.

Ever since Dragon Ball FighterZ was revealed at E3 2017, a large supportive community has been behind the game. It filled a void left by the Marvel vs. Capcom series, and after Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite failed to live up to expectations, hype grew to an all time-high before launch. Clearly, that anticipation translated into sales, so developer Arc System Works and publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment are likely pleased with the results.

A ton of DLC has been released for Dragon Ball FighterZ since launch as well. While the fact that the DLC saw several different versions of popular characters like Goku and Vegeta added to the roster became a running joke, DLC has allowed characters like Cooler, Broly, Bardock, and Zamasu to enter the fray. The game came to Nintendo Switch in September, which surely helped the title get over the 3.5 million mark.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is currently available for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. If you want to get a taste of the action yourself, the game can currently be picked up on Amazon.
