It’s been almost a year since Remedy’s Control launched. Despite not hitting the lofty heights of some Triple-A titles, the game was still considered a success. It continues to grow, with the AWE DLC recently confirmed to be crossing over with 2010’s Alan Wake and the confirmation that Remedy is building a connected universe.

Now, publishers 505 Games have confirmed that the game will be getting an Ultimate Edition later this year. The new edition includes the Control base game, The Foundation DLC, AWE DLC, The Expeditions end game mode, Photo Mode and all the content updates since the release of the original game. The press release revealing the Ultimate Edition also confirms that the game will be coming to both the PS5 and Xbox Series X and for the first time ever, Steam.

It will be dropping later this year, however, due to the ongoing pandemic, 505 Games are “unable to ship both digital and physical editions at the same time”. The release schedule for the Ultimate Edition looks like this:

• August 27th – Steam
• September 10th – Epic Game Store, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (digital)
• End of 2020 – PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (physical edition)
• End of 2020 – PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (digital)
• Early 2021 – PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (physical)

The water is already muddied when it comes to next-gen upgrades. Some games such as Marvel’s Avengers are offering them free of charge, while others like NBA 2K21 are only offering them on certain editions. Sadly for Control, it falls into the later. In the press release, it’s confirmed that only players who purchase the newly announced Ultimate Edition will gain access to the free upgrade on either PS5 or Xbox Series X. The comment reads:

What if I purchased the original version of Control previously?
The free upgrade path to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 version of Control is only available for Control Ultimate Edition.

While it’s great that a next-gen audience will have access to the game, the general consensus around this practice is that it’s not fantastic, especially for those who have already forked out for the game, and the DLC.

Control is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One and the AWE DLC is due to drop on August 27. Let us know in the comments below if you’ll be purchasing the Ultimate Edition.
