If you have heard people saying things like, “Hot dang those Yakuza games sure are good! Thanks for making ’em, Mr. Sega!” over the past few months or years but have held off on diving into the series until now, well, here’s your chance to dive right in.
For those who own an Xbox One and are subscribed to Xbox Live Gold, Microsoft has announced today that the first three entries chronologically in the series will be free to play from now until the end of this coming weekend. Yes, from October 1 through the 4th, Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 will be part of Xbox’s Free Play Days, meaning that you can download them all and begin playing without being charged a dime. While each title has been available on Xbox Game Pass for awhile now, it’s nice to see Sega and Microsoft try to make this awesome series even more accessible.
Of course, if this is the first time you’re looking to play the Yakuza games now, you might be wondering where you should start. Fortunately, our own Kris Cornelisse has written up a fantastic article just for you that explains how the franchise breaks down and what the best jumping-on point is. And personally, as someone who played Yakuza Kiwami earlier this year for the first time, I think it’s absolutely worth giving a shot.
As for the next entry in the series, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is set to release alongside the Xbox Series X next month on November 10 and will also be coming to PS4 and PC on the same date. Those holding out for a PS5 release, however, will have to wait until next March.
