Project xCloud is another tool Microsoft have in their already impressive arsenal. Supplementing the behemoth that is Xbox Game Pass, the cloud-based gaming service allows players to stream Xbox games directly to their phones, tablets and other compatible devices. While testing has been ongoing for a while, Microsoft recently revealed a loose release window of “September” for their xCloud service.
The exact released date within that window has now been confirmed by Microsoft in an official post, along with some other new details about the service and its launch. The post states:
“Beginning September 15, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can play more than 100 games from the cloud on their Android phone or tablet.”
It’s worth noting that the initial launch will be considered a “beta” for those subscribed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and will only be available on Android. There is no mention of when the service will be hitting iOs.
Microsoft have confirmed that from September 15 xCloud will be launching in a total of 22 countries to “ensure stability”. The countries included in the initial launch are: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The service, which was previously confirmed to be included for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers at no additional cost, will include games such as Minecraft Dungeons, Destiny 2, Tell Me Why, Gears 5 and Yakuza Kiwami 2 at launch.
Microsoft also issue a reminder within their post that “friends list, achievements, controller settings, and saved game progress” will all be available as part of the xCloud service.
Microsoft now has an incredibly impressive 10 million subscribers to Xbox Game Pass, who when it launches will be able to jump right into xCloud. The service, which is often described as “the best value in video games”, will now be even more lucrative, as alongside access to the library of 100+ games on their Xbox or PC, players will now be able to use them via xCloud.
