What is Xbox Series X planning to do when it comes to physical games? A fair chunk of consumers are still physical only, and undoubtedly the PS5 and the next gen Microsoft console will be fighting for visual dominance when they start filling up store shelves. With the looks of the game cases being nearly as iconic as the games themselves, its no wonder that fans of the console are spitballing ideas of what packaging should look like. Thankfully, some amazing concept art for the Xbox Series X box art may have already hit the nail on the head.
The hype is slowly building about next gen; ever since the reveal of the Xbox Series X at The Game Awards 2019, the industry news about the consoles have been winding about which publisher has the upper hand. While I’ve made the case that PS5 will be winning mainstream consumers from the logo alone, some of my other DualShockers colleagues are a bit more hesitant to take that leap. Thankfully, that hype is helping produce some awesome concepts including this box art below.
The concept for the Xbox Series X box art (created by an unknown Reddit user) is perhaps tastefully perfect. In 2020, minimal branding is a win, allowing for more focus on box art real estate. More importantly, you might notice that the label says “Xbox” instead of “Xbox Series X.” This is very likely where Microsoft is aiming, given that they intend to adopt an Apple-like naming convention instead of a numbered platform approach. Embracing it outright on the console, marketing the game as ‘Enhanced’ instead of dedicated to the XSX would likely be a daft move for the team.
In other recent Xbox news, Head of Microsoft Studios’ Matt Booty revealed earlier this week that the new Xbox console will not be launching with dedicated exclusives at launch, hoping to speak to an established ecosystem. This is a radically different approach than historical launches, and what is reported to be coming to the PS5 launch lineup. In any case, it will be interesting to see how this strategy performs.
Both PS5, Xbox Series X, and the next gen gaming consoles as a whole seem to be exceptionally fertile ground for concept artists. We loved this idea for what the PS5 boot screen should look like, and think that PlayStation design developers should be leaning into gaming nostalgia.
In any case, the Xbox Series X is planning to launch this Holiday 2020. As more information becomes available about Microsoft’s next console, DualShockers will make sure to keep you updated.
