In what has already been a busy day for Xbox news, Microsoft confirmed this afternoon that it will soon be ending production of two current Xbox One models.

Coming by way of The Verge, Microsoft revealed that it is planning to halt the manufacturing of both the Xbox One X and the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition. The baseline version of the Xbox One S, however, will continue to still be made and sold across the world.

The reason for this halt in production, according to Microsoft, is that it will allow the company to focus more on the next-gen console, the Xbox Series X. “As we ramp into the future with Xbox Series X, we’re taking the natural step of stopping production on Xbox One X and Xbox One S All-Digital Edition,” a spokesperson from Microsoft explained to The Verge.

While not outright stated, another reason that likely played a part in Microsoft’s decision here surely relates to how there have been hardware shortages of the Xbox One in recent weeks. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, all gaming hardware ranging from the Xbox to the Switch has been hard to come by. Rather than feeling a need to try and hurriedly recoup those shortages, however, Microsoft seems to have decided to just begin turning the page and will focus on manufacturing more units of the Xbox Series X instead. And can you really blame them?

If you’ve been looking to get your own hands on an Xbox One X or Xbox One S All-Digital Edition in recent weeks, this is surely crummy news. That said, Microsoft seems to be likely to fill the void left behind by these two consoles as it is said to be planing to release two SKUs of the Xbox Series X, one which will be all-digital. More news on this console, which is rumored to be called the Xbox Series S, is reportedly said to be arriving in August.
