At E3 2018, Phil Spencer took to the stage during Microsoft’s press conference to announce that it had acquired several studios like Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games, and Undead Labs. At the same time, Microsoft also unveiled The Initiative, a brand new studio that created in Santa Monica. Today, we finally learned a bit more about the self-described “independent studio under the banner and financial backing of Xbox Game Studios and Microsoft” in a brand new video.
In case you aren’t aware, The Initiative is headed up by Darrell Gallagher, an experienced developer who has worked at studios like Activision, Sony, THQ Nordic, and Rockstar; that being said, you would probably know him best for his work on the Tomb Raider reboot over at Crystal Dynamics. He is one of several developers featured in this introductory video about The Initiative and in it he discusses how The Initiative wants to “challenge the convention.”
Throughout the introductory video, we also hear from Recruiter Annie Lohr, Director of Production Brian Westergaard, Lead Designer Drew Murray, Technical Director William Archbell, and Director of World and Narrative Blake Fischer. They all reflect Darell Gallagher’s comments about wanting The Initiative to be a “tightly knit” team that is okay with “pushing boundaries” in gaming. These are some ambitious goals for a studio that was created less than a year ago, so it will definitely be interesting to see how The Initiative’s first game comes out.

There is currently no information on when The Initiative’s first game will be arriving, but you can be sure that DualShockers will let you know when that title is unveiled.
