If you’re like me, you probably thought at some point that the battle royale craze had finally died down. That the market for that genre of multiplayer titles had finally been saturated, and they’d be seen less and less. As it turns out, I was wrong, and to be honest I’m kind of happy about that. Because the next battle royale game I’ll likely sink hours into is Worms Rumble, which was announced earlier today.

Back in March, it was revealed that there would be a new Worms title in 2020. The teaser video for that announcement came with the tagline “New Worms, new ways to play,” although this isn’t quite what I had in mind. Worms Rumble diverges greatly from the series’ past entries. Rumble is ditching its turn-based system in favor of real-time combat, although it’s not entirely clear how this new style will work. The trailer below shows large groups of worms fighting simultaneously while running and wall-jumping around an enormous battlefield.

According to the trailer, Worms Rumble will also support cross-play and 32 player matches. The Worms’ style is also getting a generational change to something a little more cartoony, much like Fortnite. It’s just as well that players will be able to customize their legless fighters.

If the premise of Worms Rumble has you interested (just like me), you have an opportunity coming up to play the game early. Starting July 15, Worms Rumble will have a PC-exclusive beta. Simply sign up here and wait for an email to come your way. There aren’t any details yet about a timeframe for the game’s release, but we do know that it will only be coming to PC and PS4.
