World of Warcraft: Shadowlands was set to launch on PC later this month. Between the series of Afterlives shorts and the relatively well-received beta, it seemed like it was on track to hit its October 27 release date. Today we learned that is no longer the case and the game has been delayed to sometime later in 2020. Obviously, given the current state of the world, everything in game development is even more in flux than it usually is. That said, it’s a bit of a surprise to get the delay announcement this close to launch.

The post that Activision-Blizzard shared today makes it sound like the game is nearly complete. They seem very happy with where the campaign, leveling experience, and overall story currently stand. However, after getting some more feedback, they want to spend some more time polishing the end game.

Frankly, that’s a smart move if they aren’t happy with it. While the leveling experience is important, most players spend the bulk of their time with the end game. If that’s not up to expectations, you almost have to delay to get it right. Especially when the community response to Battle for Azeroth was less than rosy.

Plus, the strain of moving to a work-from-home environment was always going to make development tough. Giving Blizzard a little more time to polish up bugs and retune the end game is only going to make World of Warcraft: Shadowlands better for everyone.

We no longer have a release date for World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. However, we do know that the pre-patch is coming on October 13. It will lay the groundwork for the expansion by introducing the new leveling system, adding in the new-player experience, and more. So, while you wait, maybe roll another alt or two.
