Why Twitch Bans the Word “Obese” From the Chat

Twitch bans “Obese” from the chat section as it could potentially be used as an insult.

The Twitch bans over the last few months have been increased by a large percentage compared to the last year. Although some bans happen because of violating the Twitch rules, the main problem is some bans occur because of no specific reason. The latest one refers to a single word.

What Happened During Nmplol’s Stream?

During a live stream from Nmplol, he asked his viewers to predict whether he would be overweighted or obese once he stepped onto the scale, but soon the streamer found out that viewers couldn’t send the word Obese on the chat section since Twitch bans Obese. Below, you can check out Nmplol’s here.

As you can guess, it didn’t receive any friendly reaction neither from viewers nor the streamer. Although the word Obese can be used as an insult, it’s actually a medical term for a certain situation of being overweight and it’s not a common insulting term.

Is Banning Words Like Obese is the Best Solution?

If you look at it from a restrictive point of view, similar to Twitch, then the word should actually be banned, but there are a lot of words that can fit into the same situation. So, banning probably is not the best available solution here.

On other hand, some Twitch users believe that the platform has much bigger problems right now than banning words like Obese. The recent growth of Hot Tub streams on Twitch is probably one of the issues that some of the platform’s users wouldn’t find related to a platform like Twitch.

That being said, thanks to the wide of variety of content provided by streamers in Just Chatting, the category turned into the most-watched section in Twitch in the first quarter of 2021. Given such a brilliant performance, it’s hard to believe that Twitch would be restrictive about Hot Tubs or other Just Chatting streams.
