Over the past year, Omega Force and Koei Tecmo have released both the massive crossover game Warriors All-Stars and the open world Dynasty Warriors 9. Unfortunately, neither of these titles were incredibly well-received. Following these experimental entries, this year’s Musou game, Warriors Orochi 4, is a more traditional crossover title.

DualShockers tried out Warriors Orochi 4 at E3 this year, and also interviewed Producer Masaki Furusawa about this upcoming title. During that interview, we asked what lessons Omega Force had learned from the development and release of both Dynasty Warriors 9 and Warriors All-Stars, and Furusawa-san had some interesting responses.

When it comes to Dynasty Warriors 9, Omega Force tried to implement an open world to mixed results. Due to the massive challenges this style of game presents, the Warriors Orochi 4 team decided to craft a game that follows the standard Musou style of gameplay a bit closer:

“With Dynasty Warriors 9, we tried to challenge ourselves with an open world. That was something new for us, so it was quite a difficult challenge. With this new title, we are hoping to bring things back to the standard Warriors-style of gameplay. That’s a more stable and complete kind of game.

Warriors Orochi 4 actually has more in common with Warriors All-Stars, as they are both crossover Musou games. During the development of All-Stars, Omega Force had some trouble bringing out the personalities of all the characters involved. With Warriors Orochi 4, they narrowed their focus down to just the Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors IPs, though the game will still feature a massive cast of playable characters:

“Regarding Warriors All-Stars, what we learned was the difficulty in bringing out the personalities of characters from different IPs. Each IP had their own personality, so for this title we focused mostly on Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors. We hope that this can fulfill most fans’ desires.”

Dynasty Warriors 9 is currently available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, while Warriors All-Stars can be picked up on PC, PS4, and PS Vita. For those of you who want to purchase Warriors Orochi 4 when it releases on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on October 16th in North America and 19th in Europe. The game can currently be pre-ordered on Amazon.
