Warriors Orochi 4 was announced for the west earlier this year by Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo, and while it’s fairly traditional in many areas, it makes some interesting changes with both the addition of both Greek Mythology and a Magic System. During a recent interview with DualShockers, Warriors Orochi 4 Producer Masaki Furusawa explained why the developers decided to bring Greek Mythology into the mix, and how they are trying to keep the Warriors Orochi series fresh on its fourth entry.

Greek mythology will play an important role in Warriors Orochi 4, whether its through the game’s story or via playable characters like Zeus and the recently revealed Athena. The developers over at Team Ninja thought that adding a western mythology to the mix would be interesting, as it blends with the prominent eastern mythologies in a unique way and would surprise players:

The previous Warriors Orochi took place in a world featuring an eastern taste because of Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors, the underlying bases of this series, are derived from Chinese and Japanese history. We introduced western Mythologies, which are totally different from the ones of the east, as a motif so that players would be surprised and feel the new original aspect of this game. Western Mythologies are very well known and we are excited to bring about an unprecedented chemical reaction, so we decided to take the plunge.”

When asked about keeping the series fresh, Furusawa-san said that they try to keep the gameplay and story mechanics feeling new. The game’s writer, Yoshitaka Murayama, tried to create a story for Warriors Orochi 4 that focused on the allure of the game’s main characters, and the developers added the magic system to make the gameplay feel slightly different than previous entries:

Warriors Orochi 4’s keyword is fantasy, and following this we made its story and in-game actions new. We asked Mr. Yoshitaka Murayama, an active developer of video games and skilled at writing ensemble cast stories, to draft and supervise the story that deeply portrays the allure of the characters.

In terms of action, you can not only use characters in the same way as the previous Warriors Orochi games, but also enjoy the totally new ‘Magic’ skills which, although was a challenge to implement, broadens the range of actions. We are sure that Warriors Orochi series fans will definitely feel the new changes.”

DualShockers also tried out the game at E3 this year with Furusawa-san, so you can check out our impressions of the title. Warriors Orochi 4 will release on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on October 16, and can currently be pre-ordered on Amazon.
