Well, here’s something that could drastically shake up the video game industry as we are currently familiar with it.

According to a new report from CNBC, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the publisher behind popular franchises associated with Mortal Kombat, Batman, and LEGO could soon be sold off to another company within the industry. AT&T, who is the parent company of WarnerMedia, which in turn owns WB Interactive, is said to be looking to sell the video game division of the company and is looking to acquire around $4 billion in any potential deals. The report goes on to say that Take-Two Interactive, Electronic Arts, and Avtivision-Blizzard could be some possible suitors if an acquisition was to occur.

Obviously, there’s a lot to break down here, but let’s start with this: just because this report has come about doesn’t mean anything will come of it whatsoever. We’ve seen instances of this in the past where murmurs start surfacing like this only for nothing to come of it.

That said, AT&T might be more likely to push for a potential sale of this kind considering it has only owned WarnerMedia since 2018. As such, the parent company could be looking to move things about just a bit to get its assets in line with what it finds to be ideal. CNBC’s initial report expresses this as well, stating that AT&T has previously pushed to sell “non-core assets” of which it might consider WB Interactive to be.

As for what would happen in a potential sale, well, a lot remains to be seen, but studios such as Rocksteady and NetherRealm that WB currently owns would seemingly be folded into the structure of another publisher. The rights to all IPs owned by WB such as Batman, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter would also be on the move with the deal too, which would be a major bolster to any publisher’s catalog.

All in all, what’s being outlined here probably isn’t anything that would come about in the immediate future, but it’s worth keeping an eye on for sure. If any further developments end up being disclosed to the public, we’ll let you know.
