Valve’s high-end virtual reality headset, the Valve Index, maybe the best way to play VR games, but affordability is not one of its many features. Despite it’s $999 price tag, there has recently been a shortage with only one indication of why people are spending hundreds of dollars on a headset: Half-Life: Alyx.
As of this writing, just about every option players have to purchase the Valve Index is sold out. These packages are aimed towards players who already own certain pieces of equipment that are accessible with the new headset. The Valve Index VR Kit, which is meant for new players wanting to dive into Valve’s world of VR, is available to purchase. However, due to high demand, delivery before December 25 is not guaranteed.
So, what does this have to do with Half-Life: Alyx? According to Road to VR, the Valve Index headset was back-ordered when it launched back in June. However, before the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx, the headset was available for “immediate shipping.” Post-announcement, it seems to be a bit more difficult to get the headset. As of right now, it seems these shortages are only in the United States, Canada, and Italian Steam store. The UK Steam store currently has all Valve Index Kits available.
Announced last week, Half-Life: Alyx is set between Half-Life and Half-Life 2 where you will play as Alyx Vance, one of the founders of the human resistance against the interdimensional organization, the Combine. If you want to see what Half-Life: Alyx trailer was revealed alongside the announcement. Screenshots were also shown, which gives a more detailed look at the game’s visuals.
Half-Life: Alyx is set to launch sometime in March 2020. If you don’t have the Valve Index, don’t fret. The game will be accessible with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality, as well.
