As many expected beforehand, Epic Games today formally gave us our first look at the Unreal Engine 5 via a new tech demonstration on Sony’s forthcoming PlayStation 5.

Highlighted in a new demo called “Lumen in the Land of Nanite,” the footage that was released showcases the gorgeous new visuals that will be available on next-generation hardware. The video also features voiceover work from Epic’s Technical Director of Graphics Brian Karis and Special Projects Art Director Jerome Platteaux talking about what it is that sets Unreal Engine 5 apart from previous iterations of the engine. Additionally, the footage is said to be running in real-time and was captured directly from a PS5 dev kit.

The demo is largely super impressive and gives us one of our first looks at how games will look on the PlayStation 5. Not only are environments more detailed than ever before, but the dynamic lighting that is featured surpasses virtually everything that we see in current-generation titles. While “Lumen in the Land of Nanite” likely isn’t a full game that will ever be widely released, to know that this is what future video games will be looking like as we enter the era of the Xbox Series X and PS5 is exciting.

You can check out the full Unreal Engine 5 tech demo in the video down below. Epic says that the engine is set to arrive next year in 2021 and we should see a whole lot more of it in the future.
