It was only a little over a year ago that Mike Laidlaw, the former creative director of the Dragon Age series at BioWare, announced that he would be joining Ubisoft at a new studio in Quebec. Now, Laidlaw has announced that he’s already going to be moving on from Ubisoft.

Over on Twitter, Laidlaw informed everyone that today, January 31, marks his last day with Ubisoft. “Huge thanks to the talented and welcoming folks at Ubisoft Quebec City for my time there,” Laidlaw said to those that he worked with at the studio. While Ubisoft Quebec is currently working on Gods & Monsters, it isn’t known if Laidlaw may have been working on this project during his tenure at the company, which began in December 2018.

As for what’s next for Laidlaw, well, it doesn’t seem that he even knows just yet himself. Laidlaw said that moving forward he will “take stock and figure out what’s next” in regards to his future in the video game industry. While many in the video game business tend to move from one company to another rather quickly, it doesn’t seem as though Laidlaw specifically left Ubisoft for another immediate role.

Laidlaw’s departure from Ubisoft comes about not long after Ubisoft revealed that it would be overhauling its editorial board to change the creative course of its future projects. It doesn’t seem as though Laidlaw’s departure from the publisher coincides with this move, but it does seem somewhat odd that they occurred so closely together. On the positive side, former Splinter Cell director Maxime Beland was revealed to be returning to Ubisoft to help work on this new editorial staff.

With a resume like Laidlaw has, it likely won’t be too long before we see him pop up elsewhere around the industry. Heck, maybe he’ll even end up back at BioWare to work on Dragon Age 4, which is currently in development, assuming that’s something he’d even like to do.
