Twitter Reveals Animal Crossing as the Most Talked About Game This Year So Far

There has been a lot of gaming-related conversations this year, lots of highly anticipated games, the next-generation is on the way, Unreal Engine 5 was teased. It’s been busy for sure. Twitter has been keeping tabs on the conversations taking place this year, and in a new blog post, it’s been revealed what conversations have been the most popular on the social media platform.

According to Twitter, in the first 6 months of the year 2020, there have been a billion tweets about gaming. In comparison, last year it was reported that there over 1.2 billion tweets about gaming in 2019 alone. It’s detailed that this is a 71% year-over-year increase in conversation volume, and a 46% YoY increase in unique authors.

During the first half of 2020 Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the most talked about game on Twitter globally, with Fate/Grand Order coming in second after being the most talked-about game in 2019.

As for countries, Japan, the USA, and South Korea have been the top 3 countries talking about video games, followed by Brazil, Thailand, France, the UK, India, Spain, and the Philippines. Twitter also brings up the Topics feature that was implemented to the social media website last year, allowing users to follow specific topics such as video game companies, and games. “Gaming” was the most followed topic, covering pretty much everything. Meanwhile, esports and Animal Crossing was the most followed topics following that.

With global pandemic rendering the majority of events as digital live-streams this year, social interaction has been at a high. Sony’s The Future of Gaming on PS5 was the most talked about conference this year, with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, and Gran Turismo 7 being the most discussed games during the event. The Niconico Net Chokaigi 2020 event is in second place for talked about events and the third most talked event was the Xbox Games Showcase.

There are more fancy stats on the official blog such as the most discussed esports teams and discussed games that were shown during other events such as Skate 4 during EA Play. It’s certainly no lie that all of these events taking a digital shift due to the coronavirus has impacted the social space. Were you part of the conversations this year?
